"The Human Equation" was the sixth album by Dutch musician Arjen Lucassen's progressive rock project Ayreon. As with other Ayreon albums, it features several musicians as guest musicians who previously had nothing to do with the project, including James LaBrie from Dream Theater, Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, Eric Clayton from Saviour Machine and Devin Townsend, who play music arranged and composed by Lucassen.

The album deals with the theme of psychological rebirth and tells the story of a man who falls into a coma after a car accident and, trapped in his own mind, is confronted with his past, his emotions and his current situation. The circumstances of the accident are mysterious, as the man ("Me", played by James LaBrie) crashed into a tree on a deserted road in broad daylight. He then falls into a coma that lasts twenty days, with each day represented by a single song.

Each song follows a slightly different format, but there are important common themes, such as the presence of "Me's" obvious emotions in his dream world, including fear (Mikael Åkerfeldt), sanity (Eric Clayton) and pride (Magnus Ekwall); the presence of "Me's" wife (Marcela Bovio) and best friend (Arjen Lucassen) at his bedside; and the past events that "Me" is left to reflect on.
