Alessandro Quarta: The 5 Elements [Blu-ray]

In “The 5 Elements”, Alessandro Quarta presents a musical composition that brings the five classical elements of earth, water, air, fire and ether to life. The opera, consisting of six pieces, takes the audience on an emotional journey that revisits the ancient Greeks’ notions of beauty and permanence. Quarta considers the elements in terms of both their positive and destructive power. Each element is musically represented by specific chords and motifs – such as the calmness of the earth in C minor or the unpredictable power of fire in A minor.

In this opera, Quarta invites the audience to find their own connection to music and nature. He describes water as a symbol of his hometown of Otranto and as a gateway to the Mediterranean, while air symbolizes the movement and breath that constantly surrounds us. Finally, the ether, the most complex element, concludes the opera with a powerful crescendo. The music, which unfolds from soft, melancholy tones to dramatic climaxes, evokes intense feelings in the listener and encourages them to reflect on the meaning of the elements.
